Existing Kitchens & Renovations

If you would like to renovate your kitchen area and would prefer not to start with a blank canvas, there are a number of improvements you could undertake without removing your kitchen units;

  ►  Changing the tiles on the floor;
  ►  Re-painting the walls;
  ►  Changing the handles and knobs on your existing kitchen units;
  ►  Hand-painting your existing kitchen units;
  ►  Removing existing tiles on the walls and either replacing them or painting the walls;
  ►  Upgrading your worktop to a granite or quartz worktop;
  ►  Removing and replacing your existing window boards;
  ►  Upgrading your sink, taps and hob.

Installing a new granite or quartz worktop, upstand, window board and hob panel is a great way to create a new look in your kitchen.

When replacing your worktop, there are a number of aspects to consider. As we have successfully removed and replaced hundreds of older laminate worktops, we can help you with all of these aspects and suggest the best solutions for your individual project, including;

►  Laminate worktops are usually 28mm, 38mm or 48mm in thickness - and can pose a problem if you have top/upper units coming down onto the worktop. There are a number of ways we can deal with this during the installation of your new worktop

  When your existing worktop is removed, your existing wall tiles may be higher/lower than your new worktop. There are a number of ways we can solve this problem during the installation of your new worktop.

►  If you decide to remove your wall tiles, it is very likely the wall will be damaged. We can advise you on the best way to cope with this, including re-skimming the wall and obtaining a perfect surface ready for painting.

Granite/Marble/Limestone

We only buy premium high-grade granites and marbles, and hand pick the majority of our stones both in Ireland and the biggest stone slab processing countries of Italy and India. We also only buy our slabs in sequential order, which ensures they have been cut out of the ground and processed side-by-side, ensuring the best possible consistency as we move from one slab to the next. As a result, we encourage all our customers to visit our premises in Ovens, Cork to inspect their slabs and discuss the manufacture of each worktop before we begin cutting. In addition, all our worktops are sealed with the most advanced sealants on the market, guaranteed by the manufacturer for 15 years.

Quartz

Hickey’s Stoneworks are currently exclusive area agents for the Cambria and Okite quartz ranges, while also a recommended fabricator for Cosentino (Silestone).

We also supply Santa Margherita, Hanstone, Compaq and Technistone.

Colours

The main granite and quartz colours are on display in our showroom in Ovens, however we can source almost any colour of stone on request. We would always recommend customers to look at stone samples in person, as colour cards and internet samples don’t always capture the complete spectrum of colour in each stone.

Stone Worktop Overview & Features and Options

Below is an overview of the various components of a worktop surface, as well as the different options we offer to our customers.

Under-mounted Sinks

The vast majority of sinks used in kitchens nowadays are under-mounted, with the sink installed underneath the worktop. Our CNC’s use the sink manufacturers’ digital template to cut and polish the required sink profile in the stone, as well as drilling the required number of tap holes for your tap. This ensures an absolutely perfect cut-out, as determined by the sink manufacturer. We can overhang the stone over the edge of the sink, keep it flush with the sink edge or recess it back from the edge of the sink, depending on our customer’s requirements.

Flute/Drain Lines

Our CNC’s use what is known as a C-Axis to cut and polish the flute lines in the stone surface. This means that unlike some other methods which leave small grainy lines, our flute lines are perfectly profiled and polished to the same level of polish as the worktop surface. The flute lines can be straight or curved, and on one or both sides.

Recessed Sink/Drainer

A recess is created by milling down into the stone surface and dropping the sink and/or draining area by approximately 2.5mm-3mm. The advantage is that water is contained within this area, preventing spillage to other areas of the worktop. A full recess involves dropping the sink and drainage area, while a half recess drops only the drainage area.

Upstand (Standard/Cladding)

Upstand is a strip of stone installed on the wall behind the worktop, protecting the area from dents and splashes. With modern day paints now catering for wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms, there is no need to tile once the upstand is installed. The standard upstand height is 100mm (4 inches), however we can custom cut your upstand to the required height, from 20mm all the way up to full wall cladding with socket/switch cut-outs.

Upstand can also be profiled, shown is a simple but effective quadrant removed from the end of 100mm upstand.

Hob panel/sink panel

Using our CNC technology, we can create almost any shape of panel or upstand you might require. Your options are limitless, let us know if you would like us to design a specific shape for your panel or suggest some possibilities from the hundreds of customised panels we have created.

Two options are illustrated, one simply curved sink panel in Cambria Quartz (Victoria), and well as a hob panel in Kashmir White granite filling the entire space between the legs of an overmantle.

Window Board/Corner Shelf

As most kitchen areas are designed around window areas, a striking feature is to continue your stone worktop up onto the window board in your kitchen. This can be done in either 20mm/30mm stone to match your upstand, or it can be fully profiled to match your worktop.
